I have a deep and abiding love for the simple bean. They are lovely, uncomplicated plants. Plant seed in reasonably good soil and treat them well, and you will have a tasty harvest about two months later. There are many kinds of beans, but my favorites are the bush beans. Low to the ground and sturdy, bush beans merely dance in the harsh summer rains instead of collapsing in a heap like their vined brethren. They can be shaded quite well by medium-sized companion plants, without complaint. Picking bush beans is reminiscent of playing peekaboo or hide and go seek, or trying to find Waldo on a page. You're looking, looking, and then suddenly- beans! It's very satisfying.
I love beans so much, that I've taken up small scale farming growing... beans! The name of the business is
Bell's Better Beans, and I will be selling my little beauties through the amazing
Suncoast Co-op in New Port Richey. First harvest for sale will probably be a week from Saturday. I am very nervous and excited.
I even have a logo (designed by the talented top man, and my son's favorite soccer coach of all time, Tim Dohrman, at
Eatery Ads):
I feel very blessed to be able to take my passion for organic, non-GMO, locally grown food and put it into fruitful practice.
