One of the 7 million+ things I love about my husband is the fact that he likes to read. He reads in a manly sort of fashion- usually in 15-20 minute sprints. He'll read just about anything, as long as it meets his unwritten standards. I've been working on cracking his code (the code of the manly bookshelf?) over the course of our marriage. Here is my hypothesis:
1. If the book is fiction, it must be an epic story. By epic, I don't mean that it has to be awesome (although that helps). I mean epic in the classical sense, as in the story is something Joseph Campbell could have analyzed. There must be heroes, quests, villains, good vs evil, man vs nature, battles, etc.
2. If it is non-fiction, it must meet one of several conditions:
A. The content will allow him to debate (manfully) with his friends during poker, sitting around the fire pit or at a table at the cigar bar.
B. It contains useful information related to his career.
C. It will further his enjoyment of his (manly) hobbies. See below:
I wouldn't go so far as to say this applies to all men, but I think it's a good starting point. What are your thoughts on The Manly Bookshelf?
