My Desk

This is what I see when I open the door to my office:

Usually there's a chair, but it obscured the picture. Sometimes I pay bills at my desk, which is why there's a shredder to the right. Sometimes I like to write in other rooms and take my notes with me, which is why the pink file basket is on the floor in front of the shredder.

Some of the artwork is my own, created while planning my writing. Mr. Smarty Pants created some of it, especially his Prophecy. Some was created by Mr. Autism, who loves crayons and markers but HATES colored pencils with a passion. Some was created by my very talented mother. There's a picture of Mr. Smarty Pants on an imaginary ranch that my very talented father put together in photoshop. I love it.

This is a slightly closer look. The Keep Calm and Carry On sign holds the motto of my life. On the metal swirly thing, Captain Janeway from Star Trek Voyager is swinging on a Mockingjay pendant. Her ship, Voyager, is at the bottom of the swirly thing. It is not actually crashing. I just couldn't figure out how to make it not point either straight up or down. (I love Voyager. More people should too.)

Here's what else:
  • The oversized goodbye letter given to me by students from the school I taught at. I still miss those kids.
  •  Postcards from Harvard Square
  • Iron Man pez.
  • Pretty candle warmer from the parent of some of my favorite kids
  • Butterfly picture holder that I never use for pictures but love anyways.
  • OTT light, because I get migraines and I don't like them. The OTT light helps me with that.
  • Giant, professional pencil sharpener. I have a serious pencil sharpening compulsion; my pencils must always be perfectly sharpened.
  • Superhero toy cars, a gift from Santa
  • More pictures of my boys
  • Index card holder, full of ideas
  • Origami Yoda created by Mr. Smarty Pants
  • Chargers for Mr. Autism's iPad, my Kindle and my horrible cellphone
  • Keyboard that plugs into my laptop, because hey, no one likes carpal tunnel
  • Wireless butterfly mouse, for the same reason
  • Binder clips, pushpins, and paperclips
  • Pretty peacock card from a dear friend with a goodbye poem that still makes me misty
You can usually find a coffee cup here too. This one is a Disney one: Por Favor, Mantanganse alejado de mi cafe (Please stand clear of my coffee). Either you've ridden the monorail enough to get that joke or you haven't. I'm not judging.

This is my beloved geek's desk area. It's not usually this clean. We just relocated it from the living room to my office. He might put some pictures on the wall at some point. At least, I hope he will. Between our desks is where my file cabinet lives. On top of it? A paper sorter that I need to sort through, an apple timer (leftover from my teaching days) and a container full of decent pens and sharp, sharp pencils.

I am very pleased with how nicely the workspace has come together. I think you can tell a lot about a person from what they keep in their workspace. What's one thing you have in your workspace that says a lot about you?
