Friday Morning Roundup

Last night the open house went well at Mr. Smarty Pants' new school. His teacher is very nice, and very pregnant. I feel for her. It can't be easy to chase after a room full of 2nd graders with a baby on board.

Mr. Smarty Pants told me the other day that it's not fair that she sneaks snacks at her desk and they're not allowed to eat when they want to. I told him that babies are always allowed to eat when they need to, and he agreed that this was okay. Everything has to be fair for him, these days.

I signed up for a conference on Tuesday afternoon. I'll have to shuffle Mr. Autism over to Grandma's house again, maybe both boys this time. Mr. Smarty Pants does not want to go to school, he's already learned everything and he doesn't fit in.

He does have one friend, and gets in trouble for talking with him when he's not supposed to. His friend and his mom were there last night, and I swallowed my natural shyness and reached out, exchanged phone numbers. Apparently the other boy doesn't have many male friends in his neighborhood either. Could be a match made in heaven.

In other news, I got a call from one of my beloved geek's cousins last night, inviting the boys to his son's birthday party a week from Saturday. He was very clear about both boys being invited, which nearly brought me to tears. You see, he knows Noah pretty well, has seen what his behavior can be like, and he absolutely wanted both boys to be included in the invitation.

Usually we don't get invited places where non-family children will be. Even if it would be appropriate for Mr. Smarty Pants to be there, I guess people don't want to single out Mr. Autism so both boys get excluded. I end up hearing about it later, from people who assume I declined. This is surprising, and really sweet. We'll be there, gift in hand, and grateful for the inclusion.

This morning Mr. Smarty Pants has a doctor's appointment and then off to school. I will write, write, write, tend the garden and then clean. Should be a busy but satisfying day.
